Sea change, or C-change, refers to a sweeping or fundamental upheaval, metaphorically related to the sea. Tommy Flanagan references the concept in his album title, which cleverly refers to his earlier album Overseas (Prestige, 1957). Overseas is a classic record in jazz history and a reminder of Flanagan's enduring talent that continued until his death in 2001 at age 71. Flanagan is a senior member of my "no wrong notes" club of elite pianists.
Despite its gimmicky premises, Sea Changes is a typical Flanagan trio album whose perfection is guaranteed by his rock-solid rhythm partners, Peter Washington and Lewis Nash. My esteem for them is evident in my selecting them, either together or separately, on 10 of my posted favorites.
Sea Changes is another release that was recorded in New York and originally came out in Japan on vinyl and CD. I've never seen the vinyl, but I guess that it was pressed from a digital source. Fortunately, the CD version is excellent - another of Jim Anderson's sonic masterpieces!
